The Georgian Church opened an exhibition of sacred works made by prison convicts yesterday.
The display, opened at the Sameba-Holy Trinity Cathedral youth center, features more than 300 icons, crosses, and other liturgical items. The collection also includes poems and an album of music by one convict, the Georgian Church reports.
The opening of the exhibition was attended by His Grace Bishop Mikaeli of Tianeti and Pshav-Khevsureti, the head of the Church’s Department for Relations with Convicts, employees of the Patriarchate, and representatives of the State Penitentiary Service and the Academy of Arts.
Within the framework of the rehabilitation-resocialization program for convicts, woodcarving workshops have been operating in penitentiary institutions for years. Convicts can also learn iconography with a professional teacher, which not only gives them the opportunity to spend their free time productively, but also to find employment after release.
