The Treasures of the Stroganovs

A Photo Gallery

In the All-Russia Museum of decorative arts an exhibition was held, called, “The Artistic Inheritance of the Stroganovs. The Starting Point. Solvychegorsk”. This unique project from the Sovychegorsk Historical-Arts Museum and National Park acquainted visitors with a dynasty of Russian industrialists, benefactors, state activists, and patrons of the arts from the sixteenth to twentieth centuries. By their unique example the famous industrialist family of the Stroganovs showed that a strong, centralized government, a spiritual and humanitarian initiative, culture, art and free enterprise by free people—both merchants and workers—provides an opportunity to build a flourishing state. It was precisely the town of Solvechegorsk that became the starting point for Russia’s creative and industrial development. The exhibition carries us away to those glorious times when Russian industrialists put their money into the organization of workshops, where their wives and relatives created and labored for the adornment of God’s holy churches. Witness to this are the rich contributions by the Stroganovs to churches and monasteries, some of which are displayed in the gallery.
