Orthodox hierarchs express condolences for mass shooting in Prague

Fourteen people were killed and more than twenty injured when a student opened fire at Charles University in Prague last Thursday. The shooter also died.

The Prague Diocese of the Orthodox Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia, under His Eminence Archbishop Michael of Prague, stated:

With deep sympathy and immense sadness, we watched yesterday’s events at the Faculty of Philosophy, Charles University. We pray for all the victims and for the speedy recovery of all the injured, while expressing our deep condolences to the families and relatives of the victims from the entire Prague Orthodox Diocese. Memory eternal!

His Eminence Archbishop Juraj of Michalovce and Košice stated:

As a graduate of the Faculty of Philosophy at Charles University in Prague, I express deep dismay and immense sorrow over today’s tragic event at our Alma Mater. May the good Lord grant peace to the souls of all the victims, healing to all the injured, and comfort and strengthen everyone affected by this tragedy that has forever changed their lives.

His Holiness Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II of Georgia also sent condolences to His Beatitude Metropolitan Rastislav of Prešov, primate of the Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia:

We are deeply saddened by the gruesome attack which took place on December 21st. Please convey our compassion to the families of the deceased and victims, and to the entire Czech people. We are praying for the recovery of the injured and imploring the Lord to grant peace to the world.
