The abbot and brotherhood of a monastery on the Greek island of Corfu are prayerfully supporting His Eminence Metropolitan Evlogy of Sumy, one of the persecuted hierarchs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

Met. Evlogy is the latest hierarch to be targeted by Ukrainian authorities. He was officially informed last month that he is being investigated for “inciting religious hatred,” which stems from his homilies in defense of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the hierarch explained.

On Tuesday, March 5, the Holy Monastery of the Vlacherna Icon of the Theotokos in Skripero, Corfu, made a social media post in defense of the Metropolitan:

We are saddened to learn of the trial of Metropolitan Evlogy of the city of Sumi in Ukraine as well as the priests of that city for whom an icon of our patron St. Spyridon was earlier painted in our monastery! We pray and hope that our saint will quickly bring his protection to our tested brothers and also provide a solution to their problems!

The Diocese of Sumy writes that the Vlaherna Monastery was founded in the 16th century by the Larnakas family (the head of the security service of the Byzantine Empire) with money received from the Pope of Rome for transporting Sophia Paleologue from Constantinople.
