Two Serbian Orthodox churches in Croatia were vandalized and desecrated this week.

The Church of St. Spyridon in Petrinja has been attacked many times. In May 2022, it was graffitied with fascist Ustaše symbols. According to the latest report from the Diocese of Gornji Karlovac, the church has been attacked seven times since 2019.

The diocese reports:

In the night between September 10 and 11, 2024, the Churches of St. Spyridon the Wonderworker in the center of Petrinja and St. Nicholas at the Orthodox cemetery in Petrinja were targeted by vandals, who wrote graffiti conveying messages of hate and intolerance.

The Church of St. Spyridon, whose construction began in 2019, has been the target of desecration for the seventh time, this time with graffiti written on the bell tower, while the Church of St. Nicholas from 1798, after structural renovation, was desecrated with graffiti on the western facade.

After a report by the Church community in Petrinja, criminal police teams conducted investigations, and a complaint was filed against unknown perpetrators.
