At the start of the school year, more than 2,000 students from needy families in the Râmnic Archdiocese of the Romanian Orthodox Church received backpacks and other necessary school supplies.
The Archdiocese reports that it spent just under $48,000 (215,500 lei) altogether to supprt 2,315 students.
This initiative, blessed by Archbishop Varsanufie, aims to prevent school dropouts by supporting children from financially limited families. The archdiocese recognizes that school abandonment is a complex issue stemming from various factors, including lack of interest, motivation, trust in education, and financial difficulties faced by parents.
To address this, priests in each parish of the archdiocese’s four deaneries distributed essential materials for the new academic year.
The project, which has become an annual tradition, targets disadvantaged students, at-risk children, and high-achieving pupils. By providing this support each September, the Archdiocese hopes to encourage school attendance and assist those in need.
OrthoChristian reported last month on the distribution of backpacks and school supplies by a parish in Moldova, and earlier this month on a similar event by His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine.
