The Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia’s London cathedral recently unveiled new frescoes depicting several great saints of the British Isles.
The new frescoes were painted on the front of the choir loft, leaving little unfrescoed wall space in the entire Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God and the Holy Royal Martyrs, reports the ROCOR Diocese of Great Britain and Western Europe.
The diocese writes:
The Diocesan Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God and the Holy Royal Martyrs in London, England, has been adorned with newly-painted frescos beautifying the front facade of the choir loft. The space—one of the few remaining in the cathedral that had yet to be frescoed—now contains icons of six saints of the British Isles: among them, St. Swiphun of Winchester, St. Botolph, and St. Ethelwold of Winchester, who served with St. Dunstan and translated the holy relics of St. Swiphun and St. Botolph, and who in his turn was revered in Kyiv in the eleventh century.
The images of these local Orthodox saints join those of many other saints of the British Isles already in place on the walls of the Cathedral, together with saints of many other regions and eras of Orthodox history.
