The head of the schismatic “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” was commemorated during the Divine Liturgy at the Patriarchal Cathedral in Bucharest, Romania, on Saturday, which was celebrated by the visiting primate of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus.
Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus is in Bucharest for the annual pilgrimage in honor of the city’s patron, St. Demetrius the New. While the Cypriot Church tacitly recognizes the schismatic OCU, the Romanian Orthodox Church does not.
The Divine Liturgy was broadcast by the Romanian Orthodox Church’s Trinitas TV, including the Archbishop’s commemoration of “Metropolitan” Epiphany Dumenko of the OCU, reports the Union of Orthodox Journalists.
Thus, the Cypriot primate chose not to respect the canonical and liturgical order of the Romanian Church, but instead brought his own practice.
The same thing happened five years ago, when Patriarch Theodoros of Alexandria commemorated Dumenko in Cyprus, at a time before the Cypriot Church had recognized the OCU in any way, despite having promised that he wouldn’t.
Meanwhile, the Romanian Church has established its own “Romanian Orthodox Church in Ukraine,” which it hopes to legally register.
