Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law prohibiting citizens from countries where sex changes are legal from adopting Russian children.
The corresponding document has been published on the legal acts publication site.
The bill introduces changes to the Family Code that prohibit the adoption and guardianship of Russian children by persons who are citizens of countries “where gender reassignment through medical intervention is permitted,” reports RBC.
The document specifies that this refers to the use of medications intended for a sex change, as well as changes to identity documents regarding sex without corresponding medical intervention.
Earlier, State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin called the bill “an important decision to protect childhood and traditional values.” According to him, it’s necessary to protect children “from the dangers they may face when adopted or under guardianship by citizens of foreign countries where sex changes are allowed.” He specified that the ban on adoption or guardianship of Russian children would affect citizens of several dozen countries.
The law applies to citizens of Australia, Austria, Argentina, Belgium, Britain, Germany, Denmark, Iceland, Spain, Italy, Canada, Norway, Finland, Switzerland, Estonia and other countries, Volodin wrote earlier on his Telegram channel, according to Interfax.
In July 2023, President Putin signed a law prohibiting sex change surgeries in the country and changing sex in documents. If one spouse undergoes a sex change, the marriage is dissolved, and people who have undergone a sex change will not be allowed to adopt children or become guardians.
Earlier, in December 2022, Putin signed a law banning the propaganda of “non-traditional sexual relations, pedophilia, and sex changes” among people of any age.
