St. George Monastery in Jerusalem is currently running a fundraiser to benefit an Orthodox orphanage on the South Pacific island nation of Fiji.

The monastery is led by Abbess Marianna, a nun of 30 years originally from Cyprus, and many of the monastery’s projects are spearheaded by Sister Christina from Australia, who has been laboring at the monastery since 2015.

This month, the monastery is selling teddy bears with a pocket prayer book, with the proceeds going to the St. Tabitha Orphanage in Fiji, part of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Zealand and All Oceania. “The pocket prayer book has all the prayers you need for your daily spiritual life,” the monastery writes.

See the monastery’s fundraiser page for the full prayer book table of contents and to make a purchase to benefit the St. Tabitha Orphanage.

Funds will be donated to the orphanage via Paradise4Kids, an international charitable organization staffed by volunteers who are committed to helping the poor, the needy, orphans, and Orthodox ministries, such as the work of Bishop Themistocles (Themi), known for his remaining beside his flock amidst the Ebola endemic

in Sierra Leone.

The principal of the orphanage, Dr. Eleni Athinodorou, writes about its mission:

St. Tabitha’s orphanage is based in the Western District of Lautoka, Fiji, away from the hustle and bustle of tourist destinations but close enough to neighborhoods that echo challenges found across the world. This includes drugs, alcohol, violence, child trafficking and the lucrative business of drug dealership in schools. The need for care, protection and education has become a big priority for the Mission and the focus on planning ahead, is ever in our thoughts and prayers.

Paradise4Kids helps the orphanage in the following ways:

  • Supporting the holistic care and education of children at St. Tabitha’s orphanage & children’s home

  • Improve educational outcomes for the current children by introducing a primary/high school tutoring program.

  • Establish a Community Kindergarten accessible to local families in the Lautoka District.

There are also future plans to build a medical clinic.

The orphanage can also be supported directly through Paradise4Kids.
