The Church of the Protection on the Nerl River, that unofficial symbol of Russia, was built during the period of the flourishing of the Vladimir-Suzdal Princedom under the holy Grand Prince Andrei Bogoliubov. At that time, near Vladimir, the prince’s residence, Bogoliubovo, was built with a white stone fortification, a palace, and the Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos. And to the north of Bogoliubovo is the town of Suzdal—one of the most picturesque towns of Russia’s “Golden Ring,” and last year marked its millennium.
