Günzburg, Bavaria, Germany, September 11, 2025
A cross was erected and blessed on the feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, August 29, on the site of a future monastery church at Seyfriedsberg Castle in Günzburg, Bavaria, marking another milestone for the St. Job of Pochaev Monastery in its new location.
His Eminence Metropolitan Mark of Berlin of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia presided over the Divine Liturgy on the feast of the Dormition and celebrated the blessing of the cross. The future church will be consecrated in honor of the Dormition, the German Diocese reports.
The St. Job of Pochaev Monastery relocated to Seyfriedsberg Castle from Munich, where it had been located since 1945. The brotherhood held its first moleben at the new property on November 10, 2024, during the monastery’s patronal feast. Approximately 500 pilgrims from across Germany attended the service, which included the official transfer of the castle keys to the monastery.
The move from Munich was prompted by overcrowding, mold issues, and problems with the surrounding community at the former location. The brotherhood selected Seyfriedsberg Castle for its more remote setting, though the building requires substantial renovation.
An open house held at the castle in May drew 2,000 visitors from throughout Germany. The monastery is now developing detailed renovation plans and determining timelines for various projects, some of which will require volunteer assistance.
A video from the open house includes scenes from in and around the monastery:
