The Patriarchate of Constantinople’s Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain launched its ninth Discover Orthodoxy program Tuesday evening with unprecedented attendance, as more than 600 people logged into the opening Zoom session of the online catechism course, the diocese reports.
Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain offered his blessing to inaugurate the series, which has become a significant pathway for those exploring Orthodox Christianity in the UK and internationally.
Leading the weekly 45-minute sessions are Archimandrite Nephon Tsimalis, who serves as protosyncellus of the Archdiocese and dean of the Cathedral of the Divine Wisdom in London, alongside Fr. George Tsiappourdhi from St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Southampton.
The program, which continues through early spring, covers Orthodox Christian teachings, history, and spiritual practices. Past iterations have resulted in substantial numbers of conversions to Orthodoxy. The latest cycle resulted in nearly 200 baptisms and chrismations at Twelve Apostles Greek Orthodox Church in Hatfield, Hertfordshire County, on Lazarus Saturday.
The growing enrollment numbers reflect mounting interest in Orthodox Christianity across Britain, with participants joining from various locations via the online format.
