The intercession of the Most Pure Virgin and the saints is the central theme of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God with saints in the borders.
The iconography of St. Ambrose of Optina is based on the icon painted for his canonization. That icon, in turn, was created from both portraits and photographs of the saint.
