St. Dumitru Stăniloae is considered one of the foremost Orthodox theologians of the 20th century. He was among the 16 martyrs, confessors, and ascetics canonized by the Romanian Orthodox Church in 2024.
The new edition, Spirituality and Communion in the Orthodox Liturgy, is now available from Holy Cross Orthodox Press in Brookline, Massachusetts
With this volume, St. Dumitru’s theological “trilogy” (Dogmatics, Spirituality, Liturgics) is now complete in English. Previoius volumes were also published by Holy Cross.
“In Spirituality and Communion, Stăniloae presents the liturgical life of the Church as a spiritual experience that deepens our communion with God and neighbor,” explains Fr. Radu Bordeianu in the foreword.
“He maintains that the worshipping Church is raised into the Holy Trinity, and the Eucharist is the Kingdom of the Trinity. The Church is a union that participates in the love between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. As adopted children of the Father, we who are united with Christ through faith, Baptism, and the Eucharist experience this filial bond in the Church.”
In the Eucharist, we discover our identity as members of the Body of Christ.
“When we participate in the Eucharistic sacrifice, Christ empowers us to present ourselves as spiritual sacrifices to the Father, united with the Son’s sacrifice. As the Church—the Body of Christ—is sacrificed to the Father, we, its members, grow into the likeness to Christ, are clothed with grace, and the love of the Father descends upon us,” Fr. Radu Bordeianu explains.
The work was translated by Fr. Ioan Ioniță, who was a student of St. Dumitru during his doctoral studies in Bucharest and is the translator of previous St. Dumitru volumes from Holy Cross.
