As is the case throughout America, churches in Colorado Springs have been experiencing explosive growth over the past few years.
Holy Theophany Church (Orthodox Church in America) baptized more than 160 people in the two-year period from 2022 to 2024, necessitating the construction of a new church. In February, that new church, St. John the Baptist, was consecrated by His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon, the primate of the OCA.
But the congregation at Holy Theophany has continued to grow so rapidly that it is practically back to the same situation before St. John’s was built, with dozens of people having to stand outside on Sunday mornings because the church is so full, rector Fr. Andreas Blom stated in his address at the Holy Theophany annual parish meeting last month.

The two churches have baptized or received more than 80 people this year, and currently have close to 100 catechumens, Fr. Andreas said in early November. And eight more people have become catechumens at Holy Theophany since the parish meeting.
In fact, Holy Theophany has added new catechumens almost weekly throughout all of 2025. Those turning to the holy Orthodox faith include families and single men and women, young and old, of various ethnic backgrounds.
According to the report from Fr. Andreas, Holy Theophany intends, as part of a 5-year plan, to assess parish demographics and look for new land to purchase for expansion.
The recently opened St. John’s Church also intends to establish or assist in establishing another mission in the greater Colorado Springs area.
