The Diocese of Debar and Kičevo of the Macedonian Orthodox Church-Ohrid Archbishopric helped distribute over 3,500 New Year gift packages to children in Ohrid on December 19 as part of a major humanitarian initiative organized for the feast of St. Nicholas.
His Eminence Metropolitan Georgij, together with Mayor Kiril Pecakov, personally handed out the packages to children from Ohrid kindergartens, first-graders from all primary schools in Ohrid, and children with special needs at St. Clement of Ohrid Square, reports religija.mk.
The humanitarian event was organized by the SOS Balkan Media Association for Equal Representation of Persons with Special Needs in the Media, with support from the Municipality of Ohrid, the diocese, and socially responsible companies.
“Such moments remind us how important it is to be together, united and humane, especially during the holiday period,” said Mayor Pecakov. “In the spirit of the great Christian feast of St. Nicholas, a symbol of goodness and faith, together with the Macedonian Orthodox Church … we send a message of love and solidarity.”
Beyond the gift packages, the humanitarian campaign included distribution of 100 social packages intended for vulnerable citizens and a visit to St. Erasmus Orthopedic and Traumatology Hospital in Ohrid. This year’s initiative also included a visit to the Municipality of Debar, where the youngest students at the primary school in Belčišta received gift packages.
