A Greek agricultural company has donated 100,000 books to the Patriarchate of Alexandria, to be distributed to schools, hospitals, and institutions the Patriarchate operates throughout Africa.

The books, copies of the newspaper “Orthodox Truth,” began arriving at the Patriarchate’s metochion in Kypseli, Athens, on Monday, July 6. The donation was made by Dekagro, a Greek agricultural company owned by Lavrentis Lavrentiadis, and was described as the largest of its kind to date made by the company to metropolises of the Church of Greece and to Greek Orthodox Patriarchates, reports Romfea.

Dekagro representatives delivered the books in the presence of Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and All Africa.

The Patriarch thanked Lavrentiadis personally for the book donation, saying it addressed a genuine need and would make a difference.

The Patriarch also spoke about the difficult conditions faced by Patriarchate hierarchs serving in African countries, and about his own experience of nearly 40 years of service on the continent.

He described the challenges facing residents of African countries, noting that electricity becomes unavailable outside major cities and that children often lack sufficient food, despite Africa being, in his words, the richest continent on the planet.

He said the Patriarchate operates 2,500 schools across Africa serving tens of thousands of students.
