The first holy Baptisms in the northern Madagascar city of Diego Suarez were celebrated this week, marking a new beginning for the Church of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel.

“We pray that this blessed day will be the beginning of a great missionary journey in this city, so that we may return many more times and lead multitudes of people on the path of salvation of our Lord and God Jesus Christ,” writes the Diocese of Mahajanga and Northern Madagascar of the Patriarchate of Alexandria.

Following the Baptisms, a traditional meal was offered by the Bishop Nifon of Northern Madagascar in honor of the newly baptized and all those in attendance.

A building complex is currently under construction in Diego Suarez, intended to meet the growing needs of the missionary Diocese of Mahajanga and Northern Madagascar in the region.

The diocese also recently took a further step toward establishing and strengthening the Orthodox presence in Diego Suarez by appointing a permanent priest to the Church of the Holy Apostles, ensuring continuous pastoral care for the faithful as well as the regular celebration of the Divine Liturgy and the Holy Mysteries of the Church.

Diego Suarez holds a prominent place in the diocese’s strategic planning, with the goal of developing the city into the second major pillar of Orthodox growth in Northern Madagascar, alongside the diocesan seat in Mahajanga.
