More than 45 people were united to Christ in Holy Baptism in Jinja, Uganda, on the feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos this year.

Altogether, 46 catechumens were baptized at Holy Resurrection Cathedral in Jinja, capping off celebrations that drew hundreds of faithful from across the Diocese of Jinja and Eastern Uganda of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, reports Orthodoxia Post.

The newly illumined, both children and adults, came from communities and parishes surrounding the cathedral. Bishop Silvester presided over the Divine Liturgy and the Mystery of Baptism, joined by clergy from across the diocese.

In his sermon, Bishop Silvester called on the faithful to remain grateful to God in every circumstance.

“We must always be thankful to God, even amid trials and difficulties, because He knows the purpose of all things and works for our salvation,” he said.

He also reflected on the life of the Theotokos, describing her as a model of humility, obedience, and faithfulness to God’s will, and urged the faithful never to neglect seeking her intercession before Christ.

Discussing the significance of the Dormition Fast and the Theotokos’ place in the Church’s life during August, Bishop Silvester recalled the teaching of St. Paisios the Athonite that the Mother of God continually draws near to her children, understanding their sorrows and carrying their prayers before Christ.

Addressing the newly baptized, Bishop Silvester prayed that the Lord would grant them strength, mercy, and perseverance in their new life in Christ.

“These faithful have chosen to enter the Holy Church and walk in the light of Christ,” he said, calling on established members of the Church to be worthy examples and spiritual companions to the newly baptized so they can remain steadfast in the Orthodox faith.
