Parishioners of St. Andrew Antiochian Orthodox Church in Pensacola suffered damage to their homes and property when Hurricane Isaias tore through the area on Friday night, Oct. 9. About 95% of them lost power, and many still don’t have it back.

In a report on the storm’s aftermath, the parish’s rector, Archpriest David Bleam, says there were no serious injuries. Fallen trees and debris have piled up on parishioners’ properties, and some have landed on homes. At least one family had part of its roof collapse, and the intense rain caused significant water damage.

The church building itself wasn’t damaged.

Many neighborhoods in the Pensacola area face a long recovery, Fr. David emphasizes, but the members of St. Andrew feel blessed to have the opportunity to serve one another and the wider Pensacola community.

On Saturday and Sunday, even without electricity at the church, the faithful went to give thanks to God for bringing them through the storm and to pray for those affected by it.

Donations for parishioners in need of financial assistance can be made through the parish website by selecting “Hurricane Assistance” from the drop-down menu.
