Talks on European integration needed only by those who thirst for power, and not by the people: UOC

Kiev, December 16, 2013

A representative of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Patriarchate of Moscow) has called upon the protesters from the Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) in Kiev to disperse, reports Interfax-Religion.

"Those who are now standing on Maidan, are just "scoring points". These are not defenders of the motherland, but rather a mockery of the Church; eating pork and beef on Maidan during the [Nativity] Fast, or grilling shish kebab and cooking pilau [a rice and meat dish]. The Nativity Fast is a period of repentance and reformation. We can achieve concord only in the faith and by doing good works," said Metropolitan Paul of Vyshgorod & Chernobyl, Abbot of the Kiev Caves Lavra, in his interview, published by the Izvestiya newspaper.

"Neither Europe nor Russia will help us, until we change ourselves. Moreover, talks on European integration are needed not by the people, but by those who are thirsting to rule over the people. And we must remember, that all rule is given to us by God and we always have the rulers we deserve," stressed the Metropolitan.

We should be guided by the laws in our search for a way out of the situation. "It must not be, that people first speak of their love for their motherland, but then use tear gas, stones and clubs," noted the Hierarch.
