Parishioners of the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Washington, D.C. have raised several thousand dollars in support of the Ukrainian refugees both in Russia and the Ukraine, reports the Russkiy Mir (Russian World) portal.
According to Archpriest Victor Potapov, Dean of the cathedral, the founders of a children’s trust in the central Ukraine appealed to him through his acquaintances.
“In order to be politically correct, I decided to divide the sum into two halves, sending one half to the Ukraine and the other half to Russia, because there are refugees in both countries and both need aid,” said Fr. Victor.
He recalled how the cathedral parishioners responded in the same way to the events in South Ossetia in 2008, when funds were transferred both to that republic and to one of the convents in Georgia, where those who had been forced to leave their homes were received.
