March 25 the Georgian Orthodox Church celebrates the anniversary of the renewal of its autocephaly, or religious autonomy within Christian Orthodoxy.

As IPN has been informed, Catholicos Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness Ilia II celebrated a service at Sioni Cathedral in relation to the anniversaity.

The Georgian Orthodox Church first obtained autocephaly from the Church of Antioch in the fifth century AD, but was subsumed into the Russian Church in 1811. It regained its autocephaly on March 25, 1917.

The Russian Church recognized the Georgian Church’s autonomy only in 1943. It was not officially recognized by the world’s patriarchates until 1990 after a campaign led by Ilia II.
