Unknown individuals attempted to set fire to a wooden Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate in Kiev's Pushkin Park.

Archpriest Valentin Makarov, the senior priest of the church, said the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday. At first the flames were strong, but quickly died down. The fire damaged the outer wall of the building and an icon located there, the press service for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church reported on Monday.

"An anti-flammable substance was put on the church last fall because we expected this to happen: the situation in Kiev is such that every wooden church is in danger. It is vulnerable and our 'well-wishers' will get to it sooner or later," the priest said.
