His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew spent a night in the hospital earlier this week after he began to feel sick and dizzy, reports Dobrotoliubie.
According to the doctors who examined His All-Holiness, the patriarch had felt sick on Sunday, but didn’t pay much attention to it and decided to go to Liturgy. His condition then worsened. According to The National Herald, he was taken to the American Hospital in Constantinople.
He remained in the hospital overnight as a precaution, and was released home the next day.
Pat. Bartholomew’s trip to visit His Beatitude Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and All Africa, planned for May 6-8, was canceled due to his health. According to hospital doctors, the patriarch feels unwell due to the strain of his “daily affairs.”
His All-Holiness has reportedly been under a lot of stress and pressure to resolve the question of Ukrainian autocephaly. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, backed by the Ukrainian parliament and the nation’s two schismatic Orthodox confessions, recently appealed to the Ecumenical Patriarch to grant a tomos of autocephaly to a unified Ukrainian Orthodox Church. His appeal was delivered with the backing of the Ukrainian Parliament and the hierarchs of Ukraine’s two schismatic “Orthodox” bodies—the “Kiev Patriarchate” and the “Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church”—which exist as supports for Ukrainian nationalism, fueled by anti-Russian sentiments.
The patriarch is now “in perfect health,” reports Romfea.
