His Eminence Metropolitan Germanos (Athanasiadis) of Theodoroupolis of the Ecumenical Patriarchate reposed in the Lord on Friday at the age of 88, reports Sedmitza.
Known for his ascetic life, Met. Germanos, who reposed in the Phanar district of Constantinople, where the headquarters of the Ecumenical Patriarchate are located, was also the Exarch of the Rhodope Mountains and the confessor of the Archdiocese of Constantinople.
His funeral was served yesterday by His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew at the Patriarchal Cathedral of St. George in the Phanar. See videos of the funeral below:

Met. Germanos (Ioannikis Athanasiadis in the world) was born on September 17, 1939 in Constantinople. He grated from the Great School of the Greek Nation in Constantinople, after which he studied at the Chalki Higher School of Theology (1950-1954). He was tonsured into monasticism with the name of Germanos on October 10, 1953, and was ordained as a hierodeacon the following day.
He was ordained as a hieromonk on August 15, 1966 and was elevated to the rank of archimandrite an appointed the protosyngellos of the Derkoi Metropolis on October 29, 1966. He was consecrated as a bishop on February 6, 1972, as a vicar of the Derkoi Metropolis. He became the titular bishop of Theodoroupolis on February 5, 1987, and the ruling bishop of the same diocese on October 2, 1990.
He was appointed as the abbot of Holy Trinity Monastery on the island of Chalki on January 10, 1991, serving in that position until 1995, after which he was appointed as the confessor for the Archdiocese of Constantinople.
