1988 was a turning point in the societal perception of the Russian Orthodox Church and its role in the history of Russia. The celebrations dedicated to the 1,000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus’ became a real triumph for the Russian Orthodox Church, which the faithful themselves could not have imagined. The most memorable event of 1988 was the solemn Divine Liturgy celebrated by the primates of the Local Orthodox Churches on the cathedral square at Moscow’s Danilov Monastery, five years before it was returned to the Church.

Why is Prince Vladimir called holy and given the title Equal-to-the-Apostles? He converted from the darkness of paganism to the light of Christ, receiving baptism, baptizing the Kievans and sending emissaries to baptize the people of the other cities and regions of his duchy. He was among the first of the All-Russian rulers to become a Christian, and originated the Christian form of government for Russia. From his time, the Russian sovereignty becomes Orthodox, and Christianity makes its way into all the spheres of social and civil life.

The warlike prince, though he decided to convert to Christianity, could not without Divine intervention, humble his soul to the degree sufficient to appeal to the Greeks with the meek request to be baptized and to be taught, together with his people, about the new faith. At the same time, his innate wisdom and refined political instinct told him asking this of the Greeks would not be without danger.
