The Russian north is famous for its ancient wooden churches, though many of them are in disrepair. Patriarch Kirill has called for this precious heritage to be protected and restored many times, and now there are plans to restore two more churches in the Leningrad Province by the end of next year.

As Vladimir Tsoi, the Chairman of the Regional Committee on Culture told reporters yesterday, the Church of St. Nicholas in the village of Soginitsy and the Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos in the village of Gimreka are set for restoration, reports Interfax-Religion.

The Church of St. Nicholas dates to 1696 and the Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos to 1650-1695. Both are monuments of wooden architecture of federal importance, Tsoi explained.

The fence around the church in Gimreka will also later be restored, though it is not part of the current project.

The situation is complicated by the fact that neither church is currently in use or protected in any way. Additionally, the Church of St. Nicholas sits along the shore, which is being eroded. This issue will probably be submitted to the government next year, Tsoi explained.

The committee head stressed that it is planned to complete the restoration work at both sites by the end of 2020.

The initiative to save such churches “has a truly historical significance,” Patriarch Kirill said at a meeting on December 13 with volunteers involved in restoring the churches. Applauding their work and dedication, he also called upon them to work under the supervision of trained specialists.
