Orthodox and Copts are one Church, says Patriarch of Alexandria

Alexandria, January 21, 2020

Despite the long-standing division, the Greek Orthodox Church of Alexandria and the Coptic Church of Alexandria are the same Church, Patriarch Theodoros of Alexandria believes.

The head of the Orthodox Church in Alexandria visited Patriarch Tawadros II, the head of the Coptic Church yesterday, January 20, at the headquarters of the Coptic Patriarchate in Alexandria to greet him and congratulate him with the feast of Theophany, celebrated the day before, reports Romfea.

Referring to the Alexandrian Patriarchate’s missionary activity throughout Africa, Pat. Theodoros told the Coptic Patriarch: “Our Churches are one Church, headed by Jesus Christ.”

“Greece and Egypt are fighting for peace in Libya and I know that you are praying because you have a flock there and the soil is watered with the blood of the martyrs of the Coptic Church and this blood is crying out for freedom and peace,” the Alexandrian primate continued.

Thanking Pat. Theodoros for his fraternal greeting, Pat. Tawadros said in turn: “Every time we meet, I feel inner joy. Your presence and your words fill us all with blissful feelings. I monitor and admire your ministry in all African countries, especially in the fields of education and nursing, and in all areas of caring for those who are suffering. We have the same name, we work in the same field, and we are children of the holy Mark the Evangelist.”

The Coptic Church split from the Orthodox Church following the Fourth Ecumenical Council in Chalcedon in 451, according to which Christ is one Person in two natures—Divine and human. The Coptic Church together with the other “Oriental Orthodox” Churches confess Christ in one nature.

There is one more issue to consider which is central to the Orthodox concept of salvation, and that is deification. I will relate what I have learned from an Orthodox priest who is a university professor. This father is fluent in Arabic and has studied the Chalcedonian/Non-Chalcedonian positions.

There are, however, many of both Chalcedonians and Non-Chalcedonians, who believe that all along through history, it was a language problem, a matter of semantics. However, St. John of Damascus knew their language, and he wrote against them. And if it was all along this language problem, then we would have to say that God made a mistake with the miracle He performed through the Great Martyr Euphemia at the Fourth Ecumenical council.

It's frustrating that some still disturbingly mix Monophysitism and Miaphysitism. The former is heretic, the latter is not. Oriental orthodox believe in the latter, not the former.

It's ridiculous that he said that. It's simply not true. The're in schism. Copts don't share our sentiment. They would never said something similar.

Though I am fond of the Oriental Orthodox, especially the Copts, I think our theological differences really need to be ironed out and not glossed over like they don't exist. Even though they are the closest to us in faith, we cannot unite until all of this is worked out. I applaud the Russian Church for taking on real theological discussions with various Oriental Orthodox, this is what we need

I’m wondering why this is even news. What Patriarchate hasn’t said we are “one” with somebody?? In his address to Syrian Monophysites, His Holiness Patriarch Irinej thanked His Holiness Patriarch Aphrem for his overwhelming reception; he said “What unites us is love and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; we are one Church, although, sorrowfully, the historical circumstances had divided us”. https://syriacpatriarchate.org/2019/06/patriarch-of-serbia-visiting-our-syriac-orthodox-church/?fbclid=IwAR1EUzYjXLA3_1In5IJ6gkPm1tApDN4sSeTF_l30eJDP9V6cak9fjrAeAjU
