Beirut, August 18, 2020
In his sermon on Sunday, August 16, His Eminence Metropolitan Elijah of Beirut spoke about the devastating explosion that occurred in the Lebanese capital two weeks ago, offering the people a word of encouragement and hope.
“It has been two weeks since a terrible explosion destroyed buildings and left the pain of the departed. Citizens of Lebanon are distressed by this tragedy, and we, the people of this country, are called to deal with the difficulties arising from the economic crisis and pandemics that have damaged our country,” His Eminence said, as reports the Archdiocese of Beirut.
However, His Eminence also stressed that even in such a difficult situation, the Lord will not leave the faithful, and through faith in the Lord, the faithful will draw spiritual strength to overcome the shock that they have experienced. “Every mother who lost her son today will face Him, standing with hope and faith in the general resurrection. Our country will be resurrected from its dormancy, and the land that was watered with pure blood will bloom again.”
Several Orthodox churches were damaged in the explosion that rocked Beirut on August 4, though there are also stories of churches miraculously surviving.
