Serbian Church to elect new Patriarch in February

According to a press release issued by the Serbian Orthodox Church on Saturday, the Holy Assembly of Bishops will gather on February 18 to elect a new Patriarch.

His Holiness Patriarch Irinej reposed in the Lord on November 20 at the age of 90, after being hospitalized since November 4. He served as a hierarch of the Serbian Church for nearly 46 years, and nearly 11 as primate.

His funeral was served on Sunday, November 22, and his 40-day memorial was served today in the Cathedral of St. Sava in Belgrade.

His Eminence Metropolitan Chrysostom of Dabar-Bosnia, the senior-most hierarch of the Serbian Church, is serving as locum tenens of the Patriarchal throne.

When speaking about the autocephaly of the Serbian Orthodox Church 800 years ago, one always has in mind that the history of events related to St. Sava is quite well known to the general public, but this time, what has particularly caught my attention is the question of how the autocephaly of the Serbian church and the surrounding events can be a paradigm of the canonicity of the acquisition of autocephaly?
