Nikolskoye, Donetsk, January 29, 2021
Schema-Archimandrite Zosima (Sokur), the revered Ukrainian elder who reposed in 2002, miraculously appeared to a hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the hospital in December and healed him of his COVID-19 infection.
His Grace Bishop Ambrose of Volnovakha spoke about the miracle that happened to His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion of Donetsk and Mariupol during a recent homily at the St. Basil-St. Nicholas Monastery in Nikolskoye, founded by Elder Zosima in 1998.
Met. Hilarion himself shared the details of his miraculous healing with Bp. Ambrose, asking him to include the story of the miracle in the monastery’s chronicle for the eventual glorification of Elder Zosima among the saints.
His Eminence was hospitalized last month in a Donetsk hospital with bilateral pneumonia, diagnosed with a high percentage of lung damage. Met. Hilarion was unable to sleep or eat during his hospitalization.
Then, on the night of December 27-28, Elder Zosima appeared to Met. Hilarion, who realized it was no mere dream. With his characteristic humor, Fr. Zosima told the bishop to roll over on his stomach. After the elder repeated his call, Met. Hilarion took a pillow, turned over on his stomach, and immediately fell asleep.
He woke up in the morning feeling completely different, completely healthy. The doctors told Met. Hilarion that there is such a practice of lying on your stomach to feel better, which works for some people. It turns out, Elder Zosima knew just what was needed for Met. Hilarion to recover.
“When Vladyka told me about it, I got goosebumps all over,” Bp. Ambrose said. “How many of our brothers and sisters were in the hospital for several months with the same diagnosis, on the verge of life and death, and Vladyka spent less than two weeks in the hospital. This miracle of God that our dear Father Zosima worked, he constantly works, especially in the lives of those who love him with all their hearts and ask for his help.”
According to Bp. Ambrose, those who knew Elder Zosima have no doubt that he will eventually be numbered among the saints.
