According to Church Tradition, the Holy Apostle Barnabas is the founder of the Church of Cyprus. And today, on his feast according to the new calendar, a new cathedral was consecrated in his honor in the capital city of Nicosia.
The service was led by Archbishop Chrysostomos, the primate of the Cypriot Church, and Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens, the primate of the Greek Church, with the concelebration of Metropolitan Panteleimonos of Vryoula of the Patriarchate of Constantinople and a number of hierarchs from the Cypriot Church, reports Romfea.
Abp. Ieronymos arrived on Cyprus yesterday morning and attended the evening Vespers service for the feast of St. Barnabas.
The new cathedral was then consecrated this morning after the Orthros service and before the Divine Liturgy. During Holy Communion, Met. Panteleimonos read out a congratulatory message from Patriarch Bartholomew,
In his dismissal, the Archbishop of Athens, addressing the Archbishop of Cyprus, expressed the special joy he feels being on of Cyprus, which has strong, inseparable and long-lasting ties with Greece. He then offered Abp. Chrysostomos a silver blessing cross.
At the end of the service, a special lunch was held with the president of Cyprus and other officials.
