A message on his Facebook page simply states: “Petr Nikolaevich Mamonov died today July 15. Eternal memory.”

According to Pravmir, he was blessed to receive Holy Communion and Holy Unction two days before his repose.

Mamonov first became famous as a rock musician during Soviet times. In the 1990s, he became an Orthodox Christian and began to live a simpler and quieter life. He later came back into the public eye as an actor, especially thanks to his role in “The Island” in 2006.

The 70-year-old actor-musician had been in the hospital since June 27. As his wife Olga told journalists, he had been suffering from a fever and lung problems and was infected with COVID. In the hospital, he was put into a medically-induced coma and placed on a ventilator.

He was previously admitted to the ICU in 2019 after suffering a heart attack, and was released after undergoing two successful heart operations.

His Holiness Patriarch Kirill expressed his condolences to Petr’s family and friends, noting that his death is a great tragedy for millions.

He also touched upon Mamonov’s inspiring spiritual transformation:

The deceased was an extremely talented person, gifted with a bright charisma and a subtle sense of beauty. He went through a difficult path of spiritual formation, but having once overcome a serious internal crisis, Petr Nikolaevich rethought his life and tried to do everything to be worthy of the high Christian calling. Perhaps it was precisely thanks to this valuable spiritual experience that he later especially succeeded in imagery in which a strong religious feeling was expressed.

The film “The Island” was a real shock for many, where Petr Nikolaevich, in the role of monk Anatoly, showed the transformative power of repentance, revealed to his contemporaries the beauty of the Orthodox faith, and helped them unite themselves to the Church Tradition.

Mamonov won several awards throughout his career, including best actor for his role in “The Island.”

Упокой, Господи, душу новопреставленного раба Твоего Петра в селениях праведных, идеже несть болезнь, ни печаль, ни воздыхание, а жизнь бесконечная… Аминь! ????
