As a testimony to the continued growth of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the foundation of another monastery was festively celebrated by several Ukrainian hierarchs on Sunday.

The event was held in the village of Zrub-Komarovsky in the Chernivtsi-Bukovina Diocese, where the future Monastery of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist will be located, the diocese reports.

On May 12, the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Church approved the formation of three monasteries, including St. John’s.

During the service, Met. Meletios elevated the abbot of the monastery, Hieromonk Nikodim, to the rank of archimandrite and handed him his abbatial staff. He also celebrated a diaconal and a priestly ordination during the Liturgy.

After the service, Met. Meletios offered a sermon and congratulated the brethren on the official foundation of the monastery.

And Bp. Mark gave the monastery a memorial Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God from His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine as a sign of his blessing for the newly-created monastery.

Monasticism has been growing rapidly in the canonical Ukrainian Church in recent years. A convent opened in the Cherkasy Diocese in March, another was formed in the same diocese in April, and another is currently under construction in the Vinnitsa Diocese. New monasteries were also established in Russia and Belarus in June.
