East Timor and Philippines, August 23, 2021
Thanks to the efforts of the Russian Orthodox Church, the poor and hungry in various Southeast Asian countries regularly receive necessary aid.
In the island nation of East Timor, 378 families received more than 11 tons of food, paid for by the $6,000 raised by the Synodal Department for Church Charity and Social Service’s “Antivirus of Mercy” campaign, the Department reports.
The goods were sent to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross Church in Taipei, from where the food sets consisting of 55 pounds of rice and a two-liter bottle of sunflower seed oil were distributed. The main benefactors were large families, but no one was turned away, explained Fr. Kirill Shkarbul.
The Department also allocated $1,660 (12,300 rubles) for the transportation of the food packages to distant areas.

In the Philippines, the Department of Charity and Social Service of the Philippine-Vietnamese Diocse of the Russian Church regularly provides humanitarian assistance to poor families in the Quezon Province, located 80 miles from the capital city of Manila.
Dozens of poor people, mostly hungry children, receive weekly aid, with the Department providing nutritional meals and snacks, reports the diocesan website.
After the meals, talks are also held for those preparing for Holy Baptism. Many people have become interested in Orthodoxy after one person was miraculous healed when baptized.
The Russian Church has sent aid throughout Russia and to other countries, including East Timor and the Philippines, several times throughout the pandemic.
