Quarteira, Portugal, August 31, 2021
A new chapel serving the Orthodox faithful of southern Portugal was consecrated on Saturday on its patronal feast day.
His Eminence Archbishop Nestor of Madrid and Lisbon visited the Orthodox community in Quarteira and celebrated the Divine Liturgy for the feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos. Before the start of the Liturgy, he celebrated the rite of the minor consecration of the newly-built chapel of the Dormition, reports the Diocese of Spain and Portugal of the Russian Orthodox Church.
His Eminence was concelebrated by local clergy. Following the service, a procession was made around the chapel, and the Archbishop presented an icon of the Most Holy Theotokos as a gift to the chapel.
The next day, His Eminence celebrated the Sunday Liturgy in the city of Loulé. The first Liturgy was celebrated there on April 10 after the Chapel of Portas do Céu was restored and transferred to the Orthodox community.
Last July, the foundation was laid for the first Russian Orthodox church to be built as such in Portugal. In April of this year, an Orthodox prayer book in Portuguese was published for the first time.
