As a kidnap-for-ransom crisis takes hold of Haiti, the chief priest of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia’s mission on the island nation has been forced into hiding.

The Fund for Assistance to the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia reported some truly “terrifying news” earlier today, revealing that Fr. Jean Chenier-Dumais is among those being targeted by kidnappers.

Fr. Jean has been receiving calls threatening to kill him if he doesn’t pay a “protection ransom” for several weeks now, the Fund reports.

Thus, Fr. Jean is currently in hiding.

Haiti has been known as the kidnapping capital of the world for many years now, and kidnappings have increased by 150% this year as compared to last year, the Fund reports with reference to Forbes.

Unfortunately, the capital city is overrun by gangs and the people can’t rely on the police. Thus, the Fund asks for all to pray for Fr. Jean’s safety.

The Fund also has an ongoing fundraiser for the Haitian mission with a matching pledge. More than $40,000 have already been raised to spread Orthodoxy in Haiti.

Donations can be made to the Fund via Paypal.
