Yesterday marked the 12th anniversary of the repose of the ever-memorable Patriarch Pavle of Serbia. In honor of the occasion, His Holiness Patriarch Porfirije celebrated the Divine Liturgy at Rakovica Monastery in Belgrade, followed by a memorial service at his predecessor’s grave.

In his words to those gathered, Pat. Porfirije noted that the memory of Pat. Pavle remains bright among all Serbs and all Orthodox Christians. His words remain relevant because they were not human words of pride and vanity, but rather they were, “the words of the Gospel, the words of the Church, the words of the Apostles of Christ, the words of the Lord Himself.”

The Serbian primate also recalled how endless streams of people came to bid farewell to Pat. Pavle at his funeral.

“Completely spontaneously, the people manifested their attitude towards the late Patriarch Pavle, but through that they also manifested their attitude towards their Church, their attitude towards God … because there are many virtues that adorned the Blessed Patriarch Pavle,” Pat. Porfirije said.

Among the Patriarch’s many virtues, but what tied them all together was his modesty, Pat. Porfirije said. “In the case of Patriarch Pavle, the Church has shown what we all need: peace, modesty, calmness.”

And because of his virtues, God certainly hears his prayers, Pat. Porfirije said.
