Book of Jonah translated into Turkic Karachay-Balkar language

The Institute for Bible Translation, dedicated to translating Holy Scripture into the languages of the non-Slavic peoples living in Russia, continues its blessed work with a translation of the Book of Jonah in the Karachay-Balkar language.

The Balkars are a Turkic-speaking people, living mainly in the central part of the North Caucasus in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic, with a population of 112,924 according to the 2010 census, the Institute reports.

The Book of Jonah is the second edition to be published by the Institute in the Balkar language—the books of Ruth, Esther, and Daniel having been published in a single volume in 2020. The new publication features illustrations used in other translations of the Book of Jonah.

The Balkar text of Jonah is also accompanied by parallel translations in Russian and English.

The new edition can be downloaded in electronic format from the Institute website. A translation of the Pentateuch into Balkar is well underway as well.

Translators have been hard at work for the past 19 years preparing a complete translation of the Holy Scriptures into the Ossetian language. The Republic of North Ossetia-Alania is a federal subject of Russia, just north of the border with Georgia.
