In a statement issued earlier this week, the Sacred Community of Mt. Athos calls for a ceasefire in Ukraine and expresses its deep sorrow for all the victims of the fratricidal war on Ukrainian soil.

The Sacred Community is the governing body of the Holy Mountain, made up of one representative of each of the 20 ruling monasteries.

The statement reads in full:

The Sacred Community of Mt. Athos, in response to the war that broke out in Ukraine in 2014 between brothers united for centuries by a common faith and history in Christ, has long urged the holy habitations on Mt. Athos to intensify their prayers and supplications for its cessation.

As it continues and has intensified lately, we express our heartfelt condolences and deep sorrow for the loss of so many of our brothers and sisters and our support for the victims of the conflict.

Mt. Athos, as a monastic state of more than a thousand years, following the messages delivered by our Lord Jesus Christ through the Gospel and the Church about the love between people, ceaselessly prays day and night for the peace of the whole world, and for the aforementioned warring regions in particular.

Peace will be achieved by the God Who is peace and the Father of mercies through a return to the spirit of the Gospel and the sincere repentance of all, so that love, truth, and justice may reign.

May the Protector and Overseer of our holy land, the Most Holy Theotokos, whose intercessions we invoke, together with all the saints, to intercede with the Risen Christ that this desired peace might prevail.
