The Council of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church declared its complete self-governance and independence yesterday, and reportedly removed any connection with the Russian Orthodox Church from its statutes.
However, as the UOC didn’t explicitly declare itself “autocephalous,” many questions remain about what exactly happened yesterday, and opinions about what was decided and how to evaluate what was decided differ among the clergy and faithful of the UOC itself.
Against this background, it is significant that His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia was commemorated in the Divine Liturgy broadcast from the Kiev Caves this morning.
At the 1:02:55 mark, the deacon chants: “Again we pray for our great lord and father, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill,” followed by the commemoration of His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine:
