America’s oldest Orthodox monastery is planning to open a school of iconography next fall.

The Monastery of St. Tikhon of Zadonsk in Waymart, Pennsylvania, was founded by St. Tikhon of Moscow in 1905, during his time as a missionary in America. Since then, it has served the Church in America with daily Liturgies and the associated St. Tikhon’s Theological Seminary.

And the monastery’s latest undertaking got underway on Saturday. The monastery reports:

Today St. Tikhon’s Monastery broke ground on the new icon studio school with the Kulik estate executor David Tatich. We look forward to excavating the ground in a couple weeks and pouring the foundation, God-willing at the end of June. With God’s help and your prayers we hope to open the school in the fall of 2023.

Icons and art from the monastic community can be viewed on the monastery website.

St. Tikhon’s Monastery has also been roasting high-quality coffee beans for several years now, and in January, it opened a separate café in the local community. And last fall, it launched a residential liturgical music program.
