The first service in a new Orthodox monastery in Germany was celebrated on the feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God.
And the consecration of the Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos at the monastery in Klausen will be celebrated by His Eminence Metropolitan Jean of Dubna of the Archdiocese of Russian Churches of Western Europe on September 21, reports Pravmir with reference to the Orthodox TV channel Soyuz.
According to local tradition, the church was built on the site of an appearance of the Mother of God, and there was a monastery on the same site in the 17th century. It’s also located along the St. James Way medieval pilgrimage route.
The building is also a monument of German cultural heritage, and it “came to be owned by the Orthodox community in a miraculous way.”
Fr. Timothy Katnis, director of the Apostle Thomas Pilgrimage Center and rector of the Church of St. Athanasius the Great in Trier, explained that the building was up for sale online, but the community wasn’t able to afford it.
However, the owners of the building found out that the Church was interested, got in touch themselves, and offered “conditions that were really extraordinary in that situation,” Fr. Timothy said.
There are already 60 cells in the building, and it’s planned that the monastery will be able to receive a large number of pilgrims.
