The Diocesan Council of the Metropolis of Dorostol of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church has decided that it will begin preparing materials for the canonization of an early Bulgarian Patriarch.

His Eminence Metropolitan Iakov of Dorostol made the relevant announcement about the case for Patriarch Damian (+971), bta.bg reports today.

Scholars disagree about when exactly the Bulgarian Church was elevated to the dignity of a Patriarchate and thus who the first Patriarch was, but according to a list compiled in the mid-12th century, Damian was the first.

It’s believed that a tomb found years ago in one of the basilicas of Dorostol (today Silistra) is that of Patriarch Damian.

Bulgarian Church was elevated to Patriarchate in 919, the first Patriarchy outside the original Pentarchy. The Patriarchate of Constantinople acknowledged its patriarchal dignity in 927.
