Waymart, Pennsylvania, October 27, 2022
America’s oldest Orthodox monastery has begun construction on a new welcome center, where it can formally receive guests and pilgrims.
The Monastery of St. Tikhon of Zadonsk in Waymart, Pennsylvania, was founded by St. Tikhon of Moscow in 1905, during his time as a missionary in America. Since then, it has served the Church in America with daily Liturgies and the associated St. Tikhon’s Theological Seminary.
The monastery launched a fundraiser yesterday to help bring the new project to fruition.
The GoFundMe page reads:
We are creating a welcome area for all guests and pilgrims to visit (handicapped accessible). The sitting area in front of the pond was supposed to be built next year but has already unexpectedly begun! We need help to finish paying for the labor and material for the sitting area that will welcome all to the monastery and provide a space for community and outreach. Please consider helping if you can and thank you for the consideration!
The welcome center is not the only project underway a St. Tikhon’s. The brotherhood also broke ground on a new icon studio in June, which it hopes to open next fall.
The monastery has also been roasting high-quality coffee beans for several years now, and in January, it opened a separate café in the local community. And last fall, it launched a residential liturgical music program.
