Despite its own financial struggles, the Holy Dormition Monastery in Troyan, Bulgaria, continues to make monthly donations to various charitable causes.

This month, the monastery, which is the third largest in Bulgaria, donated 63 volumes of Orthodox literature to the local community center in honor of National Enlighteners’ Day—a Bulgarian holiday that celebrates writers and educators who helped preserve the nation’s spiritual values, reports 24chasa.bg.

Among the celebrated enlighteners are St. John of Rila and St. Paisii of Hilandar.

In early February, it was reported that the monastery struggles to heat its churches, cells, and other buildings in winter due to rising electricity and oil costs.

The monastic generosity was joined by Archimandrite Vasily, the Protosingel of the Soria Metropolis, who also made a sizable donation. The employees of the community center were quite touched by the gift that will greatly enrich the library.

While the monastery tries to avoid too much publicity, recognizing charity as simply a normal part of the monastic life, it’s known that Troyan Monastery makes monthly donations—to help the victims of flooding, high school students in need, and other people in need. The monastery also opens its doors to those who need shelter.

An idea for a social kitchen is also on the monastery’s agenda.
