An increasing number of hierarchs, clergy, and monastics from throughout the Orthodox world are speaking out in defense of the persecuted Ukrainian Orthodox Church and brotherhood of the Kiev Caves Lavra.
Most recently, the abbot and brotherhood of Zographou Monastery, the Bulgarian monastery on Mt. Athos, sent a letter of support to His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine.
The letter is published on the site of the Lovech Diocese of the Bulgarian Church. His Eminence Metropolitan Gabriel, the ruling hierarch of the diocese, earlier sent a letter of support to His Eminence Metropolitan Luke of Zaporozhye of the Ukrainian Church.
His Grace Bishop Michael of Constantia of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, abbot of the Chekotin Monastery of the Archangel Michael, and the abbots, abbesses, and brotherhoods and sisterhoods of eight other monasteries also issued a statement of support for the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church in March.
The letter from Zographou Monastery reads:
Your Beatitude,
Our brotherhood remembers how you used to come to us on your pilgrimages to Mount Athos, and together we offered prayers to our common Creator and shared in the Holy Mysteries of Christ. The same thing happened with other bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and with priests and the faithful. Just as we have shared the joy of communion and brotherly love in the past, so now we are sympathetic with the great sorrows that have befallen the Church of Christ in Ukraine. The persecutions against bishops, monastics, and the faithful further intensify the tragedy of the fratricidal events unfolding in your country.
We all believe that by the good providence of God, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church will come out purified through the furnace of persecution. We also join our humble prayers to yours for peace throughout the world and for the ultimate triumph of justice and truth in your land.
We ask your holy prayers,
Abbot of the Holy Monastery of Zographou,
Archim. Ambrose and the whole brotherhood in Christ
