A diocese of the Georgian Orthodox Church has opened a day center to take care of lonely and elderly people in the city of Gori.

The center was blessed and opened by His Eminence Metropolitan Andria of Gori and Ateni on Monday, September 18, with the blessing of His Holiness Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia, reports the Georgian Church’s Public Relations Service.

The new center is based at the St. John the Merciful House of Virtues and will serve the lonely and elderly by providing a series of cultural activities.

And together with the day care center, a home care service was launched through which 20 certified nurses will provide necessary medical care. A hospice is also being built, which will be intended for palliative care.

The head of the Patriarchate’s Sts. Joachim and Anna Medical Center delivered medical supplies to the House of Virtues.

The press service also notes that the Diocese of Gori has been operating a soup kitchen for 16 years already, feeding more than 200 people daily.

In July, OrthoChristian reported on the reopening of the soup kitchen run by the Samba-Holy Trinity Cathedral in Tbilisi.
